Rain to rescue ruling party from Cauvery protests heat
Heavy rains in Karnataka has raised hopes of surplus Cauvery water reaching Tamil Nadu and such a possibility will be a major relief for the ruling AIADMK which is facing the heat from farmers unions and opposition parties on the government’s inability to obtain water for Kuruvai.

Since more rains are predicted by the Meteorological department, the chances of Mettur reservoir getting surplus inflow had increased. Besides, Mettur dam itself is getting good inflow due to rains in its catchment areas, PWD officials here said.
Rain lashing the Kudagu district, where the catchment areas of Krishna Raja Sagar dam is situated, besides the heavy rains in Kerala are brining water to Kabini dam too. The surplus water from both the dams would reach Mettur Stanley reservoir once the two dams gets filled.
The water level in KRS, which has a capacity of 124.8 feet, had reached 79.8 feet and it is getting an inflow of 8,478 cubic feet on Monday. The Kabini reservoir had reached 63 feet and its total capacity is 84 feet, the officials added.
According to officials, the water storage in Mettur dam had reached 39.8 feet on June 11 and it could be opened if the storage reaches above 80 feet.
With a year to go for the Parliament elections, Cauvery will be off the political agenda if the Kuruvai and Samba crops are cultivated without problem in the Delta districts. The process of formation of Cauvery Water Management Authority is moving slowly and Karnataka had not nominated its member to the panel till now. Without the formation of the CWMA, there is no official body to order release of water for Tamil Nadu. A heavy rainfall in the neighbouring state for a week or two followed by overflow of reservoirs will be the only way to get Cauvery water for TN.
AIADMK to celebrate legal victory over Cauvery issue
AIADMK coordinator O Panneerselvam and joint coordinator Edappadi K Palaniswami on Monday announced a series of public meetings from June 11 to June 24 to celebrate the party’s victory on the Cauvery issue, besides July 11. In a joint release here, they said the legal battles waged by the party from the days of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had resulted in the Supreme Court verdict to form the Cauvery Water Management Authority and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee. The leaders said the Union government had accepted the apex court’s verdict and added that public meetings and cultural festivals would be organised throughout the state to highlight the party’s victory. Panneerselvam would address a meeting at Tiruvarur on July 11 and Chief Minister Palaniswami would address the people at Mayiladuthurai on June 18
