Thoothukudi
Brinda visited Thoothukudi on Monday and met the victims of the May 22 police firing incident. She visited four villages, Madathur, Kumareddiyapuram, Pandarampatti and Muniyasamipuram, where she met the protesters.
She was moved when a woman at Madathur narrated how the police tortured her family during night and that forced her husband to go into hiding. After meeting the victims, she addressed a public meeting in Thoothukudi, where she shared the incident.
The CPM leader said she was shocked to hear how policemen used to visit the woman’s house at night and torture them.
She further said that the men of the house were on the run to escape the harassment by police. In one of the villages women were forced to sleep in front of the temples fearing police entry into their houses, Karat added.
She also questioned the police as to who gave them the powers to make midnight arrests and torture women and children in the houses. She further said that there were enough visual evidences of the policemen shooting at the protesters. If there were proofs why wasn’t a case booked against the policemen, questioned Karat.
