His reply came after AP Nandakumar, DMK MLA, during the debate on demands for grants for Backward Classes, Most Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare Department, raised the issue that even his constituency name was Anaikattu (dam), but there was neither dam nor check dam. The Chief Minister replied, “The government took measures to build a dam at Melarasampattu in 2005, but the project failed, as there was a stiff opposition from the public during Land Acquisition (LA).”
He also recounted that even residents took up the issue to the court, after which the entire project was abandoned. “The government is now keen to construct the dam after the case was discharged.
Measures are underway to build a dam and four check dams soon,” the Chief Minister said.
Palaniswami noted, “Preliminary works are on to construct four check dams at Agaram river near Karunkali village at the cost of Rs 4.62 crore. Similarly, two more check dams will come up in Palar river near Poigai and Pulimedu villages and these two check dams will be constructed at the cost of Rs 7 crore and Rs 2.5 crore respectively.”
The Chief Minister also announced fourth check dam, which will be constructed at Uthira Cauvery river near Odukathur village and the estimation will be Rs 3 crore.
