A Brahmin by birth, Kamal drew flak from the members of the community for his words. The Tamil Nadu Brahmins Association released a statement where its president Pammal Ramakrishnan called Kamal a traitor of his community and accused him of stirring controversy to promote his upcoming film, Viswaroopam 2.
The statement also referred to Kamal’s films such as Thevar Magan and Virumaandi that had caste overtones even though Kamal claims to have personally denounced casteism.
Kamal has said that the way to end caste-based discrimination is for people to stop referring to caste in mainstream discourse. Meanwhile, Makkal Needhi Maiam, the party founded by the actor-politician has raised a series of questions to the state government during the debates in demand for grants by various departments in the Assembly session that is scheduled until July 9.
The party said that the questions that are being raised were based on extensive internal research and inputs received from its members through the organ’s whistle blower app, Maiam Whistle. To the transport department the party raised the issue of profitability of state run transport corporations and the government’s plans to achieve the same.
The party also raised the issue of welfare of people from the state travelling to other parts of the country and the world for work and education. Makkal Needhi Maiam also brought up the crisis plaguing various cooperative societies due to issues in conducting elections.
To the Department of Food and Consumer Protection the problems pertaining to adulteration of food items and measures to stop it were raised. The party also questioned the recent conduct of Governor Banwarilal Purohit and the state government’s silence on what the party perceives as an overreach of authority by the Governor.
