In a release here on Tuesday, he said that the Centre has decided to scrap the UGC and establish Indian Higher Education Commission instead of UGC. For this purpose, the Centre has published a Draft Bill and they have called for public opinion before July 7 through Human Resources Development website.
Anbumani said to change a big institution, the BJP-led NDA government has given only ten days for public opinion, so that they could bring the Bill in the forthcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament scheduled to begin on July 18.
He said the previous government also planned to bring this Bill and, however, failed because of strong opposition from educationists, political leaders and socially conscious persons.
The PMK leader said that Tamil Nadu has played a major role in establishing the UGC. In 1949, a committee led by Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan and member Arcot Lakshmanasamy played a major role to bring the UGC to improve the education standards.
Besides improving the standard of the higher education, they wanted proper social justice in the Indian higher education system, he added.
