The I-T department held raids in over 70 places across Tamil Nadu and the neighbouring state Karnataka, targeting Christy Friedgram Industry and its shell companies, from Thursday.
A day after the raid, Karthikeyan (32), who worked in the accounts department of the infamous company, attempted suicide by jumping off from the balcony of his house, while he was being interrogated by the I-T sleuths.
Karthikeyan is recuperating in the hospital and is said to be in a stable condition. The Income Tax sleuths are looking forward to quiz him soon on the tax evasions by the company.
The firm has been supplying eggs and pulses to government schools under noon-meal scheme. It had allegedly swindled crores of rupees by fabricating bills through shell firms, which were also approved by the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation.
I-T official sources said that pen drives and laptops have been seized from the company’s office. Property documents in benami names were also seized for examination. However, the exact volume of gold and cash seized is not known.
The I-T officials have also decided to examine the bank lockers of contractor TS Kumaraswamy and question other employees of the firm. After the end of the search operations, a report is likely to be sent to the Central government for further investigation.
