Mystery deaths of dogs shocks villagers

As many as 10 dogs were found dead under mysterious circumstances for the second day on Monday in Thattapadharai Velleri village, located at the foot of a hill near Gudiyattam in Vellore district.

On information, police officials visited the village and conducted a detailed inquiry into the suspicious death of dogs. On Sunday also, carcasses of a pack of dogs were found near the village, sources said.

Although farmers could not give the exact number of dogs that died on Sunday, 10 dogs were found dead on Monday.

After Monday’s tragedy, the approximate death toll stood at 30, said police.

A majority of the farmers, who reside in this area have their houses on their farmlands and the locality is little far away from residential pockets. The area which has a sizable population of wild animals like jackals, wild hogs and wild elephant herds to frequent the region. Most farms here have dogs, while some have more than one animal.

Police are investigating whether the animals were fed with poison or they died of some unknown disease.

Many of the farmers turned emotional while burying the carcass of their pets in the common graves near their farms.

Further investigations are on into the mysterious death of dogs.
