The proposed initiative was decided following complaints that several parks in TNHB’s extension areas of Phases I to V in Sathuvachari were in a poor condition and was being misused by anti-socials, the Commissioner said.
The park close to the TNEB sub-station was the worst-affected. According to locals, the park has become a transit point for those who smuggle sand as it is stone’s throw distance from the Palar. When DTNext visited the park, two mini-lorries were found parked in the area with a few bags filled with sand kept nearby.
“The poor lighting in the park helps anti-socials to consume liquor in the open. We are unable to do anything against them,” said a resident of Double Road in Sathuvachari Phase III. Residents also pointed out that a park developed behind the Provident Fund office, more than two years ago, has not been inaugurated till now.
To this, Corporation commissioner Vijayakumar said he would look into the issue. Reacting to the proposal to build compound walls in parks, another resident said, “the exercise will bring to the notice of corporation higher authorities the dilapidated condition of parks in the Fort City.”
