Districts on Cauvery banks to be put on alert till flow subsides

After the water level at the Stanley Reservoir in Mettur touched its maximum height, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Monday held discussion with Ministers and top officials about the preventive steps to be taken in case of any emergency.

In the meeting, the Chief Minister was briefed about the current water inflow into the dam and the safety measures that will be taken when the inflow of water increases further. 

He was also briefed about the ongoing search operation in the Cauvery river, where five persons had drowned.

Later, Palaniswami directed the higher officials to send warnings to the Collectors of all the districts, where river Cauvery flows, and to safeguard the people living in low lying areas. According to sources, government has identified 25 such low lying areas in the Cauvery bed.

Policemen have been stationed along the riverbeds and the lower lying colonies are being monitored round the clock. Also, people are not allowed to go near the river for taking photos, selfies and bathing.

Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, State Revenue and Disaster Management Minister, RB Udayakumar, State Forest Minister Dindigul Sreenivaasan, State Education Minister KA Sengottaiyan, and others were present in the meeting.

Palaniswami, in a statement, has announced a relief of Rs 1 lakh from Chief Minister Public Relief Fund to the families of those who drowned in Cauvery at Vijayamangalam in Erode District.

Expressing shock over the incident, wherein search is on for one more body out of the five persons, the Chief Minister has announced relief to the kin of those whose bodies have been recovered.

The search operation to find the fifth person is still on and officials from Police, Revenue, Fire and Rescue departments are working round-the-clock to find the missing person.
