Kanchi civic chief under Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption radar

The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) has registered a case of disproportionate asset against A Sardhar, currently serving as commissioner of Kancheepuram municipality.

The agency alleged that the official amassed wealth to the tune of Rs 3.29 crore while serving as the head of civic bodies in Tirupathur, Ooty, Kovilpatti and Kancheepuram from 2013 to 2017. The official was serving as commissioner of Tirupathur, consisting of the OMR area that witnessed a real estate boom, for two years from 2013. Later, in 2015, Sardhar served as Kancheepuram commissioner for one month before being shifted to Ooty as municipal commissioner. He worked there for a year and was shifted to Kovilpatti, where he worked from September 2016 to January 2017. 

Since then, he has been working at Kancheepuram. According to DVAC, the officer and his family possessed assets worth Rs 2.16 crore on October, 1, 2013. But at the end of check period on November 23, it grew to Rs 5.58 crore, though their income earned during the period was just Rs 51.12 lakh.  

The assets the officials and family members acquired during the period was worth Rs 3.41 crore, noted the DVAC FIR, adding that the disproportionate assets acquired by the family was worth Rs 3.29 crore. Following allegations, DVAC had conducted searches at Sardhar’s residences in Chennai last November.
