Former minister and AMMK coordinator of Krishnagiri constituency S Pandurangan said that the police instigated the local residents to raise objections despite the party had the permission on Highways Department to construct the pedestal.
The public had objected to the construction stating that it blocks the way to nearly 1,000 houses on the banks of Kaundinya Mahanadhi.
Talking to DTNext, he asked, “What was the need to remove AMMK flagpole when the area has flagpoles of DMDK and DMK in addition to the statues of MGR and Jayalalithaa.”
“Though AMMK town secretary E Nityanandan and others rushed to the spot and agreed to reduce the size of the 5 feet long pedestal, the public demand its removal. This proves that they are being controlled by the police. So we decided to seek judicial intervention,” Pandurangan added.
R Kesavan, a resident, said, “It is obvious that this is a political game as the flagpoles of other parties are not being objected or demolished. They want to make sure that AMMK doesn’t have a toehold in the town.”
“We moved the court because officials informed us that they were under pressure to ensure that AMMK did not raise its flag in Gudiyattam,” Pandurangan said.
