Southwest monsoon leaves six reservoirs full

The current water level of the lower Bhawani and Mettur dams have registered a 100 per cent rise as compared to the previous year, the report stated.  

The storage capacity of lower Bhawani was 279.50 m as against the full reservoir level of 278.89 m. Similarly, Mettur dam’s current reservoir level was 240.75 m against the full reservoir level of 240.79 m. The storage level of Vaigai was 278.66 m, Parambikulam 555.96 m, Aliyar 319.71 m and Sholayar 1,003.03 m.

The live storage available in 31 reservoirs in the southern region, including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, is 41.95 billion cubic metre (BCM), which is 81 per cent of the total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. 

The storage during corresponding period of last year was 35 per cent, standing better than the last year and the average storage of last ten years of corresponding period.

The current reservoir levels of major reservoirs, Periyar (867.66 m) and Idukki (730.50 m) in Kerala are holding surplus against its full reservoir levels. Likewise, the water levels in major reservoirs in Karnataka, including Krishnaraja Sagar (752.50 m), Thungabadra (497.66 m) and Hemavathy (890.07 m) are filled to its full reservoir level.

According to the report from Central Water Commission, the water storage level of 91 reservoirs across the country has increased by 6 per cent. The live storage capacity available in the reservoirs is 112.083 BCM which is a jump of 132 per cent of the live storage of last year and 114 percent of that of the average of the last 10 years.
