Even though more than 40 days have gone by following the opening of the Mettur dam, the water is yet to flow in most of the canals in the tail-end regions of Pattukkottai, Madukkur, Adirampattinam and Peravurani. Due to this situation, the farmers complained that they are not able to start their samba cultivation.
The farmers claimed that while the flood water in the Cauvery was flowing into sea through Kollidam, they are yet to get the necessary water for irrigation.
On Tuesday, traders, farm workers and members of various political parties joined the cause.
The farmers staged a road blockade in front of the Pattukkottai bus stand. As the traffic was affected, A Murugesan, the Divisional Engineer of PWD (Grand Anaicut) reached the spot and held talks with the protesters.
The protest was withdrawn after the engineer assured that the water would be made available before september 25.
Meanwhile, in Peravurani, hundreds of farmers and traders gathered in front of the PWD office and raised slogans demanding water to the tail-end areas.
Later, they took out a procession towards the Taluk office.
