The president of Makkal Needhi Maiam released a video statement where he condemned the state government for its approach.
He said, “A politician from a different state, Yogendra Yadav, who has come to learn about the opinions of the farmers of our state, has been detained. This act is criticisable, condemnable, and preventing opinions from being shared is an act of dictatorship. We need to remind them that India is still a democratic country.”
Kamal added that people should be allowed to express their opinions without fear of arrest or other repercussions. Yogendra Yadav had been on a visit to the state to speak to the people who are opposed to the Chennai-Salem Expressway project. He, along with two farmers, was taken into custody by the police.
Later, Yadav also took to Twitter to thank Kamal Haasan for his support.
Meets farmers
Kamal had earlier met with members of the Coordination Committee of All Tamil Nadu Farmers Association who thanked him for lending his voice to the struggles of the farmers in the state and sought his continued support for their movement.
