Poet Subramania Bharathi remembered on death anniversary

A lyricist-cum-journalist, Bharathi took shelter in then French-ruled Pondicherry for 11 years from 1908 during the freedom movement after the British wanted to arrest him for his nationalist writings in the magazine "India".

Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy paid homage to renowned nationalist poet Subramania Bharathi on the occasion of his 97th death anniversary here Tuesday.

Deputy Speaker V P Sivakolundhu, Welfare Minister M Kandasamy, Legislators Geetha Anandhan and V Saminathan, delegates of different Tamil outfits and officials were among those who paid tributes to the poet.

A lyricist-cum-journalist, Bharathi took shelter in then French-ruled Pondicherry for 11 years from 1908 during the freedom movement after the British wanted to arrest him for his nationalist writings in the magazine "India".

It was during his stay here he composed several of his famous works, including "Panchaali Sabatham", "Kuyil Paattu" and a number of soul-stirring patriotic songs.
