Only Class 12 marks to be taken for higher studies

In May, the School Education Department, in its order, had stated that a consolidated mark sheet based on marks secured in Class 11 and 12 would be issued for students passing out in 2018-19.

School Education Minister KA Sengottaiyan said that in a bid to reduce study pressure, the government decided to scrap the consolidated mark sheet system.

“However, aggregate 600 marks for both the classes will continue in place of the earlier system of 1,200 marks,” he added.

According to the Minister, students will be issued a mark sheet after the Class 11 board exams. “But only Class 12 marks will be considered for admission to higher studies,” he noted.

He said the new decision was taken following a request from the Director of Government Examinations, who received numerous appeals and suggestions from various quarters to continue the old pattern of issuing separate mark sheets for Class 11 and 12.

The Minister also pointed out that students, who pass their Class 11 boards alone will be eligible to write their Class 12 exams. “This move will definitely benefit the students since they are subjected to three board exams Class 10 onwards,” he said.

Sengottaiyan added that this year, more than 23,000 students have enrolled for free NEET coaching through government. Similarly, 30,000 students have also registered for JEE coaching.
