Acting on a tip-off, a team of officials led by revenue divisional officer (RDO) C Suresh conducted a raid in the area. They found the two families living in two tiny makeshift tents.

On being questioned, the labourers said that they have been working there for three generations after their forefathers got a loan from a charcoal trader in Vandikara street in Thanjavur.

The rescued persons claimed that they were paid a pittance and not allowed to go out of the area. The government officials brought them to Thanjavur.

According to the officials, the rescued persons would be given a release order from bonded labour and provided financial compensation. They were allotted a temporary residence.

Officials from the labour department, District Legal Services Authority, District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), police took part in the rescue operation. They were assisted by SHED India, a NGO.

It may be noted that as many as 21 bonded labourers, including 13 children, employed in the same charcoal making business near Vallam Pudur were rescued on December 3, 2014.
