Police said that Ramasamy (46) and Elumalai (54), brothers and residents of Idayampatti near Vellore, eked out a living by plying bullock cart. On April 7, 2013, when they were carting a load of sand, they inadvertently damaged the steps of the house of Shankar. The pregnant wife of Shankar, Sudha, pulled them up for reckless driving.

Irked at this, the brothers and their wives, Shanthi (47) and Latha (37) picked up an altercation with Sudha. During the course of the argument, they hit Sudha with a club on her stomach. She suffered severe pain and was admitted to a hospital, where doctors told that the foetus had aborted.
