According to Theni Superintendent of Police V Baskaran, the decomposed body of a man aged around 30 was found near Dum Dum Rock on September 18 and it was identified on September 24.
The photo of the victim was circulated through WhatsApp to all police stations across TN and neighbouring states. Karnataka’s Mangaluru police after seeing the images contacted the Devadanapatti police and identified the victim as Mohammed Shabir, a native of a village near Mangaluru.
Devadanapatti police inspector J Sugumaran said, Mohammed Sabir, was an employee of a private company abroad, used to visit his house only once in six months. Meanwhile, Firdous wife of Shabir, developed a love affair with Asif, a call taxi driver in Mangaluru.
Sabir, who came to Mangalore on a month’s leave, set out on a tour to Bengaluru with his wife. On September 14, the couple left Bengaluru for Kodaikanal, which was reportedly not part of their plan. Since the couple did not return to Mangaluru as per schedule on Sept 19, family members lodged a ‘man missing’ complaint with the Mangalore police on September 20. When Shabir’s mobile phone was tracked, their location was traced to Krishnagiri.
When the couple reached Kodaikanal, Asif had also arrived at the hill station. Both Firdous and Asif had reportedly murdered Shabir near Dum Dum Rock and had dumped the body at the same spot. When Devadanapatti police checked the CCTV footage from a location close to Dum Dum Rock and found the couple and Asif passing through the stretch. This gave the evidence to the probe team that Firdous and Asif were involved in the murder. Based on a complaint by Devadanapatti Forest Watcher on September 18, a case was filed under Section 302 of IPC against the duo. A hunt is on to nab the accused.
