Musthan (28), from Varaganeri, who worked at a meat stall, allegedly jumped into the Uyyankondan river after a quarrel with his mother on Tuesday.
Shocked by this the mother shouted for help. On hearing her screams, Jahir Hussin (31), a bakery worker, jumped into the canal to rescue the youth.
However, the attempt went in vain because of the thick vegetation of water hyacinth and both, drowned in the canal.
On information, fire and rescue personnel rushed to the spot and tried to recover the bodies.
While Jahir’s body was found on Tuesday itself, rescue personnel could not retrieve Musthan’s corpse.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Musthan’s relatives continued search for his body and finally recovered it in the afternoon. Subsequently, the body was rushed to the Tiruchy government hospital for post mortem.
