While one patient, identified as Venda from Kosapalayam area, was admitted for a family planning operation, two others - Udayasankari of Pungampadi village and Divyabarathi of Tiruvalluvar nagar - were admitted for delivery.

Dr Jayaprakash administered anesthesia to Venda before the family planning surgery and insisted surgeon Suganthi Priya to attend to her first. This led to an argument between them and the anesthetist walked out of the operation theatre saying the surgeon would take a call on performing the surgery on Venda.

Following this, the two women, who were admitted for delivery, were taken to Vellore Government Medical Hospital.

Angered by the attitude of the two doctors, Venda’s relatives besieged the hospital. They shouted slogans against the doctors for not proceeding with the surgery after anesthesia was administered.  Efforts by the hospital staff to pacify the relatives of Venda failed to yield results. Dr Nandini, the medical officer of the hospital, who was on leave, was forced to come to the spot and speak to the family.

She assured that the surgery would be performed on Friday. However, Venda’s relatives refused to buy the word and wanted the surgery to be scheduled some time next month (October). They justified their demand stating that they did not want Venda to be given another dose of anesthesia in less than 24 hours.
