As many as 33 police from the 13th battalion in Chennai had come to the Nilgiris for flood relief work after the meteorological department issued a red alert. However, after the alert was withdrawn, the police were called for duty in Tirunelveli for Maha Pushkaram festival.

According to police, “The police team led by inspector Chandrabose was heading to Tirunelveli in a van. While nearing KNR Nagar, the cops noticed smoke emanating from the bonnet of the vehicle. Subsequently, the van developed a brake failure.”

The vehicle then came to a halt by ramming into a wall. Seven police including inspector Chandrabose and driver Siva Kumar suffered injuries. The injured were rushed to Mettupalayam GH and then later shifted to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) for further treatment.
