Presiding over the inauguration of GraVITas, a three-day technology and innovation meet in which 15,0000 students from 200 colleges and universities from India and abroad were expected to participate, he said the per capita power consumption, which was an index of a nation’s development, in India was among one of the lowest in the world.
Power consumption was only 900 kwh (kilowatt hour) in India which was very low when compared to 4,000 kwh in China. “Hence, we need to produce more power to meet all needs,” Viswanathan added.
Referring to T&D (transmission and distribution) losses which was 3% in Korea, 4% in Japan and 5 % in China, he said that in India it was 20%, which indicates that one fifth of the power produced in the country was either stolen or wasted.
Due to these reasons around 30 crore people in the country could not have access to power, Viswanathan said and added that GraVITas would be geared to find solutions to various problems confronting the nation.
Though drought and floods were regularly occurring in the nation, there was no proper strategy either to divert and use the water draining into the sea or to prevent drought, he added.
Earlier, student convenor Rishitha Koneru welcomed the gathering, while, Valeo director Jaji Vijayaraman, Moroccan ambassador to India Mohammed Maliki and Danfoss India president Ravichandran Purushothaman participated. Student convenor Shashank proposed a vote of thanks.
