Sources said the two men believed to be in their mid 40s arrived at the Saranya jewellery shop located on the Ellaiamman temple road around 3 pm on Friday. They then purchased the gold jewels which cost Rs 51,500. After handing over the cash, they left the shop.
Later in the evening, while accounting for the day’s sales, shop owner Viswanathan found that the notes tendered by the duo were counterfeit.
On Saturday, Viswanathan along with the traders union founder Srinivasan lodged a complaint with the Thanjavur West police. The police, who registered a case, then visited the shop. Since there is no CCTV camera in the shop, the police are struggling to identify the culprits.
