The inspection follows the district legal aid services committee receiving complaints that the contractor was charging Rs 10 daily, as against the stipulated amount of Rs 2 per day for motorcycles and Re 1 for cycles.
The sudden appearance of district judge P Magizhendhi, accompanied by sub judge Rajmohan, resulted in the contractor being caught unawares. They saw a board affixed on the premises, which has parking space for more than 1,000 vehicles, proclaiming the correct rates.
Taking note of two-wheelers without registration plates also being parked there, the judges ordered Tiruvannamalai Municipal Commissioner S Parijatham to come to the spot.
When the latter arrived, the judges ordered her to inform the contractor to collect only the stipulated amount or else risk termination of his contract. The commissioner was also asked to contact the police and to hand over to them the unregistered two-wheelers found in the parking lot.
The sudden inspection was welcomed by office-goers and school children who claimed that they had to shell out nearly Rs 300 a month for parking their vehicles.
