9 cr household toilets built in 4 yrs: Ponnar

The central government’s housing for all scheme has been receiving a good response in Vellore, since the dwellings have already been allotted to 34,030 beneficiaries against the targeted 38,062 in the district, Union Minister of State for Highways and Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan said on Monday.

Inaugurating a health and wellness centre at the primary health centre (PHC) in Melpatti that comes under Pernambut Panchayat Union, the minister said that in the last four years 9 crore household toilets have been constructed all over the country. He added that this move was subsequent to the fact that 33% houses had no toilets.

Referring to the wellness centre, he said, the scheme was aimed at ensureing 10 crore families received Rs 5 lakh medical aid per family through any hospital in the country. The wellness centres opened at Melpatti was a part of the project to open 1.5 crore such centres all over the nation, he added.

The minister also distributed Rs 500 each to mothers who delivered baby at the PHC and gifts to women in their last trimester in pregnancy.

Collector SA Raman presided over the event and also district BJP president G Venketesh was present.
