The Lok Sabha polls might be a few months away but if DMK sources are to be believed, Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi plans to enter the electoral fray from Thoothukudi.

It has been learnt that Kanimozhi, who’s Rajya Sabha tenure ends in July next year, had even commissioned a secret survey in the coastal district to check her chances of winning the seat. The results of the survey emboldened the MP so much that she had even held a few consultations with industry captains from the southern district. According to people close to Kanimozhi, the MP has a team working on the field to do pre-poll works.
The DMK women’s wing secretary, who is yet to face an election, has also met voters in the district. Kanimozhi had earlier adopted a panchayat (Venkateswarapuram) and spent her own money to desilt a lake there. A sizeable portion of the MP fund was also used to improve drinking water facilities in a few villages in the panchayat.
Kanimozhi’s interest in Thoothukudi had even echoed in Rajya Sabha where she brought up the demand to set up a new rocket launching pad in Kulasekarapattinam, besides raising other issues concerning the district.
She was instrumental in getting her late father Karunanidhi to write to the Centre earlier seeking the third rocket launch centre of ISRO in Kulasekarapattinam. She had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this connection even last month.
