Rain lashes coastal areas, more predicted as low pressure forms

Heavy rain lashed the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu on Thursday, with weathermen predicting more downpour due to the formation of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. It is likely to move north-west and concentrate into a depression during the next 24 hours.

However, Chennai and its suburbs will continue to have a dry spell with sporadic rain for at least the next two more days.

“The low pressure over the Comorin area and adjoining Sri Lanka now lies as a cyclonic circulation. Under its influence, a low-pressure area has been formed over Malay peninsula. It is very likely to emerge into the Andaman Sea and become more marked during the next 24 hours. It is likely to move west-north-westward and concentrate into a depression during the subsequent 24 hours,” Deputy Director-General of Meteorology N Puviarasan said.

MET official said heavy rain could occur at isolated places over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during the next 48 hours.

He also advised Tamil Nadu and Puducherry fishermen not to venture into the sea for the next 48 hours as the sea would be very rough. Accordingly, under the influence of the low pressure, squally weather with wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph and gusts of up to 50 kmph are likely to occur over the Andaman sea from Friday. Coastal Nagapattinam and Tuticorin district received maximum rainfall of seven centimetres during the past 24 hours followed by Ramanathapuram, six. The delta districts such as Thanjavur and Tiruvarur received moderate rain since Wednesday night.

For Chennai weather conditions, Puviarasan said the sky condition was likely to be generally cloudy. Light rain is likely to occur in some areas. Maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 32 and 25 degrees Celsius respectively.
