A reliable source from the Public Works Department (PWD) informed that the State has sent a request to release the balance quantum of Krishna water.
Under the Telugu Ganga Project, the city should receive 8 tmcft of Krishna water between July and October from the Kandaleru reservoir. Apparently, the city received only 1.604 tmcft during this period, this year.
The level in the Poondi reservoir stood at 522 mcft on Tuesday against its storage of 909 mcft the same day last year.
A senior official from the Public Works Department (PWD) said, “The available storage will be sufficient only for little over a month. We are expecting a few spell of rain in another 15 days which will improve the position in the reservoirs.”
State Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar, who also expressed similar hopes, said that the city has to receive 12 tmcft of Krishna water supply every year. While this year the city was yet to receive its quantum.
As part of the Krishna Water Supply project, the discharge from Srisailam reservoir was diverted to Somasaila reservoir. On reaching the storage level, water will be released to Kandaleru reservoir.
The PWD irrigation authorities in Andhra stopped the supply after the storage level in Kandaleru reservoir dipped towards the end of October.
