Aavin to sell 10,000 litres of milk on Deepam day
As the Vellore and Tiruvannamalai cooperative milk producers witnessed good sales during Deepavali, they now plan to sell 10,000 litres of milk on November 23, the final day of the 10-day Karthigai Deepam festival, in Tiruvannamalai, said V Kothandaraman, General Manager of the cooperative.

“The week prior to Deepavali, Vellore Aavin’s sales reached up to Rs 50 lakh from its milk and milk products. While the daily milk supply to Tiruvannamalai town is around 6,400 litres, with both Vandavasi and Cheyyar being provided with another 1,800 litres daily, we anticipate more sales during the festive season,” he said.
Stating that the milk suppliers plan to set up additional 25 temporary stalls on the 14km girivalam path to sell hot milk to devotees, Kothandaraman said, “Officials would be on their toes to help staff at the booths. We plan to sell the 10,000 litres of milk mainly from the temporary stalls on girvalam path,” he added.
Adding to this, the temple has been supplied with 3.5 tonnes ghee to light the Maha Deepam.
Though this is the lean season for milk procurement, daily procurement fluctuates between 4 to 4.20 lakh litres. The lean season usually sees a dip of 50,000 litres in its daily procurement. “This winter, as there was not much dew on the grass, cow grazing was not affected. The continued high procurement will ensure that Chennai gets 1.40 lakh litres milk through tankers on a daily basis,” Kothandaraman said.
