Feasibility study on to launch passenger ferry service

The centre is keen on introducing passenger ferry service to link coastal towns in Tamil Nadu. The much-awaited ferry service would commence from Kanniyakumari and sail through a pilgrimage town of Rameswaram through Thoothukudi and to Chennai as well.

According to Pon. Radhakrishnan, Union Minister of State for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping, on Sunday, the feasibility study is on to implement the project.


After paying floral tributes at the portrait of freedom fighter VO Chidambaram’s death anniversary on the premises of VO Chidambaranar Port in Thoothukudi, in the presence of Deputy Chairman of the Port N Vaiyapuri, the minister said, he felt pride in paying homage to the legendary freedom fighter, who played a phenomenal role in the freedom movement and revolted against the British rule.


He recalled the freedom fighter’s significant contributions and his challenging role in establishing his own shipping company and the historic event of the voyage of Swadeshi ships at sea off Thoothukudi.


Further, he said dredging project would be taken up at the VOC Port to deepen its draft to accommodate larger vessels.


Responding to a query, the minister credited the state government’s swift response to cyclone Gaja that devastated Nagapattinam district. He hailed the government’s precautionary measures that saved lives of many people, but it caused huge damage.


Apart from district Collectors, senior officers, who had been deputed by the state government, were monitoring the relief and restoration works. Moreover, several ministers had been camping the cyclone hit areas to render assistance.
