Cranes sent to cyclone-hit Thanjavur

District Collector Sandeep Nanduri flagged off a truck load of relief materials from the V O Chidambaranar Port, in the presence of Port Secretary Jishu Roy and Traffic Manager U Rajendran. Five cranes and ten power-saw machines were provided by the VOC Port to assist the restoration efforts undertaken by the State Government.

Speaking to reporters, Nanduri said efforts are also being made to send twelve types of essential items to cater to the needs of around 30,000 victims in Thanjavur district. The items worth Rs 3.20 crore would be sent in a day or two.

“Furthermore, the two centres opened to collect relief material in Thoothukudi has been receiving good response with many donors coming forward to contribute voluntarily,” he said.

In Kanniyakumari district, a relief collection centre has been set up by the members of the Indian Red Cross Society at Nagercoil on Tuesday.

“Essential items such as drinking water bottles, biscuits, bread packets, candles and mosquito coils can be offered to help the victims. Those willing to contribute can contact 9443432861, 9442237180 and 9842122190,” sources said.
