All the workers, especially the Tangedco staff continued with their job braving heavy rains in areas like Orathanadu, Pattukkottai, TIruvarur and Vedaranyam, which were among the worst-hit by the cyclone.
Workers of town panchayat department from Kanniyakumari district were equally active in clearing the debris, like fallen trees, concrete rubble and other things, from roads at Gandhi Nagar in Adirampattinam.
Same spirit was demonstrated by volunteers of several NGOs, who came from different districts across the state. They were seen transporting and distributing relief materials in various towns and villages that were completely ravaged by Gaja.
4 women inmates of relief camp run over by car near Vedaranyam
Four women inmates of a cyclone relief camp died, while a 15-year-old boy sustained injuries after a speeding vehicle ran over them near Vedaranyam on Thursday night.
Sources said the incident happened when the victims were about to cross the road to reportedly relieve themselves owing to a less number of toilets available in the relief camp.
The four deceased women were identified as N Amutha (50), S Sumathi (35), S Rajakumari (40), and R Saroja (35). They along with R Manikandan (15) were standing by the road side outside their camp located in Neermulai village along the East Coast Road to go to the other side. However, a Mahindra Scorpio car, registered in Kerala, hit the group. While Amutha and Sumathi died on the spot, Rajakumari, Saroja and Manikandan suffered grievous injuries. The injured persons were rushed to the Thiruthuraipoondi Government Hospital, where the two women were declared brought dead. Manikandan is currently undergoing treatment.
A case has been registered under IPC sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by endangering life of others), 304a (causing death by negligence). Police have arrested N Nobel (29), who hails from Thiruvananthapuram. Further investigations are on.
Cyclone Gaja had crossed the Tamil Nadu coast early on November 16 between Nagapattinam and Vedaranyam. Several thousand people have been lodged in relief camps in Nagapattinam, one of the worst affected districts.
