The CBI’s special crimes unit in Chennai, in its FIR, also mentions the charges against a public servant who disobeyed the law with intent to cause injury and drafting incorrect documents with intent to cause injury. They have been booked under Sections 166, 167, 392, 395 and 506 of the IPC.
This is the second case registered by the CBI in connection with the incident and in the first FIR, the agency had cited that 20 more outfits had been responsible for the incident.
The latest FIR was filed based on a complaint from KS Arjunan, Thoothukudi District Secretary, CPI (M). The complaint was taken up for investigation as per Madras High Court’s directive which asked the CBI to register a case on the complaints received against officials/police in respect of occurrences at Thoothukudi on May 22. “It is the duty of the CBI to get to the bottom of things and file a charge sheet,” the court had observed. Towards such an end, the CBI director should appoint a special team for investigation, the court had observed in its order passed on August 14.
