Couple attempt immolation alleging usury by police

A couple attempted self-immolation at Tiruvannamalai town police station on Tuesday alleging that a police head constable attached to the District Crime branch was torturing them demanding usury for the money he had lent to them.

According to police, Rajiv Gandhi (37) of Gandhi Nagar a few months ago had borrowed Rs 15, 000 for running a mechanic shop at from Thirugnanam, a police head constable. Rajiv paid a monthly interest of Rs 1,500. Thirugnanam demanded Rajiv to return the full amount. Since Rajiv had no money, the constable locked up the garage. When the couple came to give a complaint, the police refused to accept it. Frustrated over this, Rajiv tried to immolate himself.
