The police said he used to run a bag shop at Govindappa Naicken Street. He looted shops at night with the help of a gang from Rajasthan at night, they said.

The Flower Bazaar police elicited information about Naren when they questioned another accused. The police team was on the stakeout and put up a discreet vigil outside the shop. On Tuesday, a team raided the premise and found the gun.

The police said he purchased the weapon from Madhya Pradesh for Rs 5,000 during a recent visit.

The police said it was an old gun and no bullets had been recovered.

The investigators said Naren hired men from Rajasthan and had put them up in lodges in the city. At night, the gang would loot shops and get a commission from him, they added.

The officers said he took to looting after he incurred losses in business.

“He intended to give the gun to the gang to ‘enable’ them loot at gunpoint,” an officer said.

The Flower Bazaar police registered a case and arrested Naren. A search had been launched to arrest his associates.
