Small parties likely to stay away from high-profile contest

For instance, the Manidhaneya Janayaga Katchi, which allied with the ruling AIADMK in 2016 Assembly polls has chosen to play it safe for the second bypoll.
Nagapattinam legislator Thamimum Ansari on Tuesday said that his party will not participate in the bypolls as they are working towards Lok Sabha elections. This is the second time that the minor party has kept the ruling AIADMK at arm’s length.
“We are still friendly with the AIADMK and we thanked them for opposing the Triple Talaq Bill, but now the party general council has decided to stay away from bypolls so that the workers can concentrate on Lok Sabha elections,” Thamimum Ansari told DT Next.
Even during the RK Nagar bypolls, we stayed away from the DMK and the AIADMK, Ansari who won on AIADMK symbol in 2016, said.
Puthiya Thamizhagam leader Krishnaswamy also told reporters that his party is likely to refrain from Tiruvarur bypolls due to lack of time and Lok Sabha polls.
However, a senior AIADMK leader termed the development as a minor issue. AIADMK is a strong party that relies on its cadre. Small parties come and go.
He said that All India Samathuva Makkal Katchi led by actor Sarath Kumar is ready to ally with the AIADMK and the BJP is desperate to ally with the AIADMK. The smaller parties refraining from the high profile bypolls is a regular practice and even PMK and MDMK had refrained from the bypolls, he added.
