Addressing newspersons, Kapuria said the railway authorities had approached the SERC after the bridge developed a structural problem.

“After surveying the bridge, our team has worked out a solution. The railways had already carried out some retrofit measures. We tested the stability of the member which is distressed,” he said.

“Based on this, the extent of degradation of the material on the bridge was assessed. A portion of the bridge would be tested for necessary loading of railway wagons,” Kapuria said.

The SERC team also inspected the setting up of censors on a section of the bridge. “We will carry out a load test after all the censors are set up in the right place.

The testing would be done for a period of 15 days. We will try and complete the process as early as possible and submit the final report. It is up to the railways to take further decision in this regard,” Kapuria said.

Official sources said an empty rake of a passenger train was operated on the bridge, which connects the mainland with Rameswaram.
