Acting on a tip-off that Pathy (47), a traffic inspector in Sathyamangalam was taking bribes by intercepting lorries bound to Karnataka through Bannari and Dhimbam Ghat road during night, the two DVAC sleuths disguised as driver and cleaner proceeded in a lorry towards Bannari from Sathyamangalam.
As expected, Pathy signalled the lorry to stop and demanded a bribe. Police said that, “The cop in the driver’s seat got down and gave chemical-laced notes to him. When Pathy received the money, the DVAC sleuths broke the truth and sought to take him into custody for an inquiry.”
The tainted traffic police was shocked but obliged to follow the DVAC sleuths in his car to Sathyamangalam station. “Midway through the journey, Pathy took an unexpected turn towards Kenjanur and sped fast. The DVAC cops gave a hot chase in the lorry, but their attempts went in vain as the culprit was untraceable,” police added.
Police sources said the speeding car of Pathy had hit a parked two-wheeler, which fell on Velusamy, from Punjaipuliampatty, injuring him severely on a narrow bridge in the locality. He was taking a break while returning home in two-wheeler after visiting his sister’s house when the incident happened.
Police said Velusamy was then sent to Sathy Government Hospital for treatment. Police have booked the tainted cop on different counts including corruption charges and for causing mishap in the hit and run case. A search is on to nab the absconding cop.
