Sources said, Ariyamangalam that falls under ward no 28 has poor lighting facility and the stray dogs use to rule the area during nights. Despite the residents alerted the corporation officials, the lethargic attitude of the officials failed to curb the menace.

Early on Saturday, a group of stray dogs went berserk in the area and as many as eight persons were bitten by the dogs. Among them, Joshua (12), Abuthahir (34) and Tiru (23), all residents of Kamaraj Nagar were severely attacked and are admitted in the government hospital for further treatment.

The angry residents organised a protest against the civic body in Kattur on Tiruchy-Thanjavur National Highway. But, the protest organised in the afternoon didn’t affect traffic movement as the officials assured the agitators that they will take the necessary steps to sort out the issue.

Though the Corporation is having two ABCs, sources said it would take at least two years to reduce the canine population as the city is already a home for about a thousand stray dogs.

“We are not able to use the streets at night due to this dog menace. So, the civic body has to take the necessary steps to sort out this issue at the earliest. Otherwise, how could we consider Tiruchy as Smart City,” said Krishna Prasad, a resident of Ariyamangalam.

Meanwhile, the Corporation Commissioner N Ravichandran assured that the civic body will take necessary action on this issue.

It may be noted that around 20 persons, including a seven year old girl, was mauled by a dog three months back and they were treated in the government hospital as well as private hospitals in Tiruchy.
