The victim identified as M Muthu Karthik of Kochadai, Madurai, was picked by the crime prevention team attached to SS Colony station for an inquiry. The aggrieved relatives said that Karthik, an earthmover operator, while at work in Pandalkudi near Aruppukottai, was taken to the station on the pretext of enquiry.

However, Karthik informed his mother over phone requesting to take him out from the police station. While his mother along with the relatives reached the police station, Karthik looked tired.

After taking him out from the station, they took him to the Madurai GRH for medical treatment. Later, he died in the hospital.

Agitated over the death, relatives of the victim alleged that due to torture by the police, Karthik was unwell and that would be the reason for the death. Irked over this, the victims’ relatives took to the road demanding action against those responsible for the death of Karthik.

They staged demonstration, led by M Jeyapal, district secretary of AMMK. They refused to receive the body and sought action against the death of Karthik. Police personnel tried to pacify the crowd but they did not disperse.

Later, around 120 persons were arrested after they caused hindrance to the public. However, police sources denied any harassment to Karthik. The exact cause of death would be revealed once the post mortem examination on the body was over, sources added.
