While there are only 51 vacancies in the district, on Thursday alone, more than 3,000 candidates turned up to receive the applications, taking the police officials on duty at the home guards office by surprise.
This massive turnout of candidates resulted in people leaping over walls to receive the application and this resulted in police chasing away few people to bring the situation back on control.
The venue was then shifted to the nearby Nethaji stadium where cops managed to streamline the crowd. Police officials said that they expected only a crowd of around 400 candidates to get applications and were surprised on seeing the high turnout.
Last time when the free applications were issued, only 400 turned up to get applications for 200 vacancies.
On Friday another 3,000 turned up for the same purpose but police were on guard. It is noted that the Home Guards are paid a wage of Rs 560 a day for only 5 days a month with a monthly turnover of Rs 2,800.
