Although the schedule for the polls is yet to be announced, police have set up an election cell. Higher authorities have nominated an Assistant Commissioner, an Inspector, two Sub-Inspector’s besides ten other personnel to man the cell.
Of the total 1,800 booths in Coimbatore Lok Sabha constituency, which comprises the 6 assembly segments of Palladam, Sulur, Singanallur, Coimbatore North, Coimbatore South and Kavundampalayam, police have identified 300 booths as sensitive ones.
Police have begun to collect details of persons with a criminal history to keep criminal activities under check during the elections.
“Around 250 people, who had jumped bail, were issued with arrest warrants by the court. Efforts are on to track them to prevent any law and order problem during the elections,” said a senior police officer.
Each police station maintains a list of around 25 history-sheeters in its limits. “Their current profession is being collected. Some may be in prison, others may have shunned criminal activities. Work is under way to record their details,” said the officer.
To prevent possession of illegal arms, police have also initiated the process of creating a database on those who have valid pistol licenses.
