Gutkha scam: Senior police officers questioned by CBI

The agency has already arrested six persons including three government officials in connection with the scam.

Investigators from Central Bureau of Investigation probing the multi-crore gutkha scam on Saturday received statements from a senior IPS officer and a retired IPS officer, sources said on Monday.

“A serving officer in the rank of DGP and a retired DGP were summoned and questioned by the CBI team. The grilling took place at a bank guest house in Tirumangalam on Saturday,” sources added.

The case pertains to the illegal sale of gutkha even after it was banned by the State government, and payment of bribe amounting to Rs 40 crore to the government officials and ministers till 2016, the year Income Tax investigators stumbled up on a ledger that had details of bribes given to different officials. The agency has already arrested six persons including three government officials in connection with the scam.
