Suicide bid by prisoner in Salem
A prisoner, serving life term, allegedly attempted suicide by slitting his throat with a blade, when he was brought to a court in Salem district on Friday.

According to police, Sundarajan, a native of Karumalaikoodal, was lodged in Salem Central Prison in connection with a murder case reported in 2010.
The suicide bid took place when police produced Sundarajan in the court in Asthampatti on Friday morning. Taking out a blade he had hidden in his shoe, Sundarajan slit his throat and wrist. He was rushed to the Salem Government Hospital.
Upon being questioned later, the prisoner revealed that he took the extreme step unable to bear the harassment by prison staff inside the jail. He claimed that he was not served with proper food and was subjected to unwanted harassment.
