According to police, the MP, Dr K Kamaraj (52) was heading to attend a function organised in view of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s birth anniversary, when the mishap happened near Minnampalli bus stop at 9:15 am. He was accompanied by his personal assistant Mohammed Nazer (50) and driver Velumurugan.

Police inquiries revealed that the car was driven by Kamaraj when one of the front tyres had burst resulting in a mishap on Salem-Chennai national highways.

“Following the tyre burst, the MP lost control of the vehicle, which ran over the median and landed on the other side of the highways. As the MP was wearing seat belt, he escaped with a minor injury on his hand. Others, who travelled along with him too suffered minor injuries,” police said.

On receiving information about the accident, Karipatti police rushed to the spot and took the injured MP and others for treatment to a private hospital near Minnampalli. Several AIADMK functionaries called on the injured MP at the hospital. After administering first aid, the MP was discharged. He then proceeded towards Salem. The Karipatti police have registered a case and further inquiries are on.
