According to sources, about Rs 1.60 crore was allocated to the government high school for the construction of a new building to house the high school sections. However, the money could not be utilized reportedly due to the lack of a site to construct a new block.
Soon a family came forward to donate 1 acre of land for the construction of the building and the work started at the premises. Despite a year since the school building was not thrown open to students for use even and with repeated pleas going unheard, the locals decided to take matters into their own hands and do the needful.
Finally, the locals performed of poojas and inaugurated the building. Among those present during the function were Mohan Rao’s family-who donated the land for the cause, philanthropist Likmichand Singhvi and former panchayat president Natarajan. Vaniyambadi District Education Officer Veeramani graced the function.
The students were elated with classes being conducted in the new building as they were until then accommodated in the local middle school. According to sources, there are many such school buildings which are yet to be opened for use in the district, despite work having been completed a long time ago.
When asked the reason for the lapse in the inauguration, Vellore CEO S Mars said that “finishing works” on the building were yet to be completed. He also stated that it was not the locals here, but the Vaniyambadi DEO who inaugurated the facility, adding that wrong information was being spread by ignorant people. However, those at the spot stated that the DEO was only an invitee while the inauguration – as seen in the picture – was undertaken by the people here.
