The collegium cleared the names of justices V Bhavani Subbaroyan, AD Jagadish Chandira, GR Swaminathan, Abdul Quddhose, M Dhandapani and PD Audikesavalu, whose names were unanimously recommended by the Collegium of the Madras HC on December 6. All six judges were appointed as additional judges in June 2017.
According to the statement from the collegium comprising the CJI Ranjan Gogoi, Justice SA Bobde and Justice NV Ramana, the collegium assessed the merit and suitability of these judges to be appointed as permanent judges. “We have carefully scrutinised the material placed on record, including the complaints against some of the above named recommendees and the observations made by the Department of Justice in the file,” and found the six suitable for the position.
Before taking the decision, the collegium consulted “colleagues who are conversant with the affairs of the Madras HC” who submitted their letters of opinion. The HC has a sanctioned strength of 75, of which 15 are vacant.
