The party’s Erode South literary wing deputy organiser Veeramani, who was leading a protest in front of the Collectorate, suddenly took out a can of kerosene and poured it on herself in a bid to commit suicide. She attempted the extreme step demanding capital punishment to the accused persons.

The police, however, acted swiftly and snatched the matchbox from her hand. Water was also poured on her before the cops took the woman to the Surampatty police station. Earlier, more than 300 women held a demonstration, which was organised by the women’s wing of DMK outside the collectorate.

In Pollachi, students were asked to vacate their college hostels, in a bid to prevent crowd mobilisation for the continuing protests. Police also stepped up vigil in front of colleges as protests by students continued to gain momentum across western Tamil Nadu with each passing day over the sexual abuse issue.

Meanwhile, days after a mob vandalised a bar, presuming it to be owned by Nagaraj, who reportedly threatened the brother of the victim, all bars attached to Tasmac shops in Pollachi region remained shut onFriday.
