Last year, the government issued circulars warning only the schools that conducted special classes during the summer months.
A senior official from the Education Department told DT Next that during the last academic session, many private high schools conducted special classes for students of classes 10, 11 and 12 throughout the summer holidays.
“Following several complaints last year, we sent only notices to the schools that violated the rule,” he said adding, “This year, if any school is found conducting vigorous coaching classes for students, especially during the month of May, action will be taken immediately”.
Stating that during the previous year, the action against schools organising special classes was not stringent, the official said, “As a first step this time notice will be served against those institutions.”
“If those schools conduct classes even after receiving notices, the recognition of that particular institution will be cancelled,” he added.
The official said that this order will be applicable to schools in the State, including those under the CBSE and ICSE boards.
According to the official, the strict warning comes after private schools faced the ire of parents for exerting pressure on students by holding special classes even before the beginning of the academic year, apparently to prepare them for the board examinations.
“This year also we have started receiving complaints from the parents about summer classes,” he said, adding, “If at all a vacationcamp is organised by the schools, it should not exceed a week.”
The official also said that they have been informed by the Meteorological department that the temperature would be high in Tamil Nadu this summer.
